How do I use a mod menu?

So let us take vampire the Masquerade our for blood.

When I open the mod menu and select some category, for example, strength, a text box appears.

I've tried entering numerical value in it, but nothing changed.

What do I do and how do I properly utilise a mod menu?

It is simpler then you think, you enter a numerical value, then press the advance scene on the story, the stats should change then
